How Much Does AI Automation Cost? (2027 Pricing Guide)

AI automation costs range from a few hundred dollars a month for no-code tools, to roughly $2,000–$8,000 for a single custom workflow, to $8,000–$45,000 or more for a purpose-built AI agent, plus monthly running costs for hosting, AI model usage and support. The price depends far more on how many systems the automation connects to and how much judgement it has to exercise than on the size of your company. At Eleova, a single workflow automation starts at $750 and a custom AI agent at $2,500.

Typical price ranges

These are international market ranges published by agencies and vendors in 2026 (Layer3 Labs, Groovy Web, SoluLab). Treat them as planning ranges, not quotes.

What you're buying Typical upfront cost Typical running cost
No-code automation tools (Zapier, Make, n8n cloud) you set up yourself $0 ~$20–$300 / month
A single custom workflow (e.g. form → CRM → reply → alert) ~$2,000–$8,000 Low: tool and hosting fees
A conversational AI assistant (FAQ answers, simple triage) ~$8,000–$25,000 ~$150–$1,500 / month
A task-performing AI agent (qualifies leads, processes invoices, resolves tickets) ~$25,000–$80,000 ~$500–$5,000 / month
A multi-workflow automation programme across departments Quoted after discovery Retainer + usage

Eleova's prices sit well below these international ranges (see below). In Nigeria, local delivery costs are usually lower than the US and UK figures above. Software subscriptions and AI model usage, however, are billed in dollars, so exchange rates affect running costs.

What actually drives the price

  1. Number of integrations. Every system the automation reads from or writes to (CRM, accounting, email, ERP, WhatsApp) adds build and testing time. Older or custom systems without good APIs cost the most.
  2. How much judgement is involved. Moving data from A to B is cheap. Reading an unstructured document, deciding what it means and acting on it costs more, because it has to be tested against real examples.
  3. Data quality. If the information the automation depends on is messy or scattered, it has to be cleaned first.
  4. Volume. AI model costs scale with the number of tasks processed. A few hundred documents a month is cheap; hundreds of thousands is a real line item.
  5. Security and compliance. Handling personal or financial data means access controls, logging and data-protection reviews (for example under the NDPA in Nigeria or UK GDPR).
  6. Human-in-the-loop design. Approval steps, dashboards and exception handling add cost, and they're usually worth it.

The costs people forget

  • AI model usage. Pay-per-use fees from model providers.
  • Monitoring and maintenance. APIs change, and processes change. Budget for ongoing support.
  • Change management. Training your team and adjusting how work flows.
  • Total cost of ownership. The build is only part of the cost. Ask any provider for a three-year estimate that includes running costs, not just a build price.

How to work out whether it's worth it

A simple return calculation:

Monthly value = (hours saved per month × loaded hourly cost) + value of faster response or fewer errors Payback period = upfront cost ÷ (monthly value − monthly running cost)

Example: an automation saves 40 hours a month of staff time costing $10 an hour ($400 a month in value). It costs $750 to build and $50 a month in tools to run. Payback is 750 ÷ (400 − 50) = just over 2 months. (Illustrative figures.)

As a rule of thumb, a good first automation project should pay back within 12 months.

What Eleova charges

Engagement Price
Automation Audit (process mapping + prioritised plan) from $299
Single workflow automation from $750
AI assistant / chatbot (website or WhatsApp) from $1,500

All prices are in US dollars. Every project gets a fixed scope and price before work starts. Software and AI usage fees are billed at cost.

Frequently asked questions

Is AI automation affordable for small businesses?

Yes. Small businesses can start with no-code tools for under $100 a month, or a single custom workflow. The key is choosing a task that takes meaningful time every week, so the savings cover the cost quickly.

Why do AI automation quotes vary so much?

Quotes differ in scope (how many systems, exceptions and approval steps are included), in who does the work, and in whether ongoing support is included. Compare quotes on what's delivered and on the three-year cost, not the headline price.

Should I pay a fixed price or a monthly retainer?

A fixed price suits a well-defined first workflow. A retainer suits an ongoing programme where new automations are added and existing ones are maintained. Many businesses start fixed and move to a retainer.

What ongoing costs should I expect after launch?

Expect software subscriptions, AI model usage fees, hosting, and support for changes and monitoring. These typically range from under $100 to a few thousand dollars a month, depending on volume and complexity.
