Rebranding Checklist: How to Rebrand Without Losing Customers

A successful rebrand starts with a clear reason and strategy, keeps the recognition you've already earned, and is rolled out in a planned order: legal checks, identity design, website and SEO migration, internal launch, then customer announcement. Most rebrands that lose customers or search rankings fail on the rollout, not the design. Use this checklist to avoid that.

Before you start: is a rebrand the right move?

Good reasons to rebrand: - Your business has changed significantly (new services, markets or customers) - Your brand no longer reflects the quality of what you deliver - Customers consistently misunderstand what you do - A merger, acquisition or legal issue requires it

Weak reasons: boredom with the logo, or a new leader wanting to make a mark. Sometimes a refresh (an updated identity on the same strategy) is all you need.

Phase 1: Strategy

  • [ ] Write down why you're rebranding and what success looks like
  • [ ] Interview customers and staff: what do they value and recognise about you now?
  • [ ] Review competitors' positioning
  • [ ] Define positioning, value proposition and key messages
  • [ ] Decide what to keep (name, colour, symbol) to protect existing recognition

Phase 2: Name and legal (if the name changes)

  • [ ] Check trademark availability in every market you operate in
  • [ ] Check domain and social media handle availability
  • [ ] Register the name with the relevant authority (e.g. CAC in Nigeria) and update legal documents
  • [ ] Check the name for unintended meanings in local languages

Phase 3: Identity

  • [ ] Logo system, colour palette, typography, imagery style
  • [ ] Tone of voice with examples
  • [ ] Brand guidelines your team and suppliers can follow
  • [ ] Test the identity in real situations: website, social, signage, documents

Phase 4: Website and SEO (where rebrands often go wrong)

  • [ ] Map every old URL to its new URL
  • [ ] Set up permanent (301) redirects, including from any old domain
  • [ ] Keep or improve page content that currently ranks
  • [ ] Update titles, metadata, schema (Organization name, logo, sameAs) and llms.txt
  • [ ] Use Google Search Console's Change of Address tool if the domain changes
  • [ ] Monitor rankings and errors closely for 8–12 weeks

Phase 5: Everywhere else

  • [ ] Google Business Profile, LinkedIn, social profiles, directories (Clutch, etc.)
  • [ ] Email signatures, templates and invoices
  • [ ] Proposals, decks and sales materials
  • [ ] Signage, uniforms, packaging, vehicles
  • [ ] App store listings and product interfaces

Phase 6: Launch

  • [ ] Launch internally first, so staff can explain the change confidently
  • [ ] Tell key customers and partners personally before the public launch
  • [ ] Publicly announce why you changed, not just what changed
  • [ ] Use "formerly [old name]" on key profiles for 6–12 months

How to protect search rankings in a rebrand

Risk Prevention
Lost rankings from broken URLs Complete 301 redirect map, tested before launch
Lost brand searches "Formerly [old name]" on site and profiles; keep the old domain redirecting for years
AI engines describing the old brand Update every external profile and the schema at the same time
Lost backlinks Ask high-value linking sites to update their links

Frequently asked questions

How long does a rebrand take?

A brand refresh can take six to ten weeks. A full rebrand with a new name, strategy and identity, rolled out across all channels, often takes three to six months.

Will rebranding hurt my SEO?

It can if URLs, redirects and content aren't handled carefully. With a full redirect map, preserved content and updated profiles, most businesses keep their rankings, and often improve them.

What's the difference between a rebrand and a brand refresh?

A brand refresh updates the visual identity and messaging while keeping the core strategy and name. A rebrand changes the brand's positioning and often its name.
